Partnerships are voluntary, creative mechanisms that support the work of the Convention by offering forums for dialogue, support and practical action by all stakeholders. They can comprise all levels of government, industry and business sectors, nongovernmental organizations, academia and other international institutions and bodies.

Partnership activities can result in agreements or pledges of voluntary action in order to find innovative solutions and practical actions toward the conservation and wise use of wetlands.

Partnerships strengthen Parties’ capacity to implement the Convention.

The concerted and active involvement of stakeholders through partnerships:

  • enhances collaboration by bringing together experts and policy makers to develop guidance and guidelines together;

  • taps expertise and knowledge at a broader level;

  • leverages resources at all levels;

  • seeks creative or innovative solutions of mutual interest collectively;

  • forges new linkages and alliances between capacity-building needs and cooperative actions.

There are three main categories of partnerships under the Convention:

>Multilateral Environment Agreements and International Organizations

> International non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and

> The private sector
